Tessa Thompson Talks Importance of Valkryie’s Sexuality in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’
She was undeniably one of the fan-favorite aspects of Thor: Ragnarok and her return to the world of the MCU didn’t come without continued exploration into her character, as Tessa Thompson talks about the importance of Valkyrie’s sexuality in Thor: Love and Thunder.
With the character’s fading effectiveness and popularity in the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor had been a hero that many creative entities at Marvel were just unsure of how best to utilize; with the underwhelming Thor: The Dark World leaving his corner of the universe at a crossroads.
All of that changed with the acquisition of Taika Waititi’s tremendous talents, as Thor: Ragnarok marked a tremendous moment in the character’s film franchise and rejuvenated a hero who was slowly fading into the background; promoting him to fan-favorite status in record time.
The vibrancy and life that was present in Taika’s work on the Thor film didn’t just limit itself to the God of Thunder but also presented itself in the characters that inhabited that growing world; with the newly introduced Valkyrie being one of the most beloved new additions.
Returning for her second appearance in a Thor film, the person responsbile for bringing the character to life, Tessa Thompson, recently talked about the importance of Valkyrie’s sexuality in Thor: Love and Thunder, and her story’s focus amidst the rapidly moving narrative of the film.
Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Thompson stated, “It becomes the only storyline, particularly in a movie like this, where you don’t, frankly, have a lot of room for the storyline. So there was a lot of conversation in terms of how to treat that with Valkyrie.”
Thompson added, “And I feel really good personally, about where we got to. I hope that she’s a character that fans continue to connect to, that we have a lot of time to explore her, in all of her humanity.”
The actress concluded, “But whether or not she finds love in this movie doesn’t mean she’s not still a fabulous queer character that is open to finding love when it makes sense.”
It will certainly be one of the most interesting aspects of the film, as Valkyrie has the potential to be among the most important Marvel heroes moving forward.
