‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ Has Franchise-Best Domestic Box Office Opening
There was a lot of speculation about how the film would perform financially, as the entire industry seems to be rewriting how we quantify such a measure; but its success thus far can’t be denied, as Thor: Love and Thunder now have a franchise-best domestic box office opening.
Chris Hemsworth is now in the Marvel history books, as the first performer to headline his fourth solo film, which is a feat considering the rather tumultuous start that the character had, and his lower-performing films in his early outings.
All of that changed, however, with how the character was developed in the beloved Thor: Ragnarok and the final two installments of the Infinity Saga; deconstructing the hero to create a God of Thunder quite unlike anything the MCU has seen yet.
Taika Waititi returned to the franchise he revitalized, along with Natalie Portman’s debut as The Mighty Thor, and Christian Bales’s arrival as the terrifying Gorr the God Butcher, there was no shortage of reasons for fans to come out in droves to take in this brand new Thor adventure.
It seems as though all of these factors have led to what is the best of the Thor bunch for Marvel, as Thor: Love and Thunder now have the franchise-best domestic box office opening with its $143 million earned in its first three-day theatrical release window.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Not only is the film the best performer of any Thor film Marvel has released, but it is the third beat opening of the pandemic era behind only the $260 million opening of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the $187 million opening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

The success of Thor: Love and Thunder, although predicted by many, was not a certainty considering most Thor films have struggled in their opening weekend; Thor: Ragnarok debuted with a $122.7 Million opening, with 2011’s Thor bringing in $65.7 million and Thor: The Dark World fetching $85.7 million
It will be interesting to keep tabs on how the film will continue, and whether or not it will share the fate of Doctor Strange 2, and slow tremendously as the weeks continue.
