‘Eternals’ Star Seemingly Confirms Sequel
It was among the most surprising underperformers of Marvel’s Phase Four slate, and with many assuming that the film would be left without a follow-up, one Eternals star has seemingly confirmed the development of a sequel.
There are few projects in the vast history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that have underperformed to the level of Eternals, a project that had long been viewed by fans as a potential genre-defining project for the studio.
It took Academy Award-winning director Chloe Zhao into the world of Marvel heroes and presented her with a concept of delving deep into the metaphorical world of superheroism, and these beings that have transcended time and culture.
Although the film was poorly received from initial audiences, it remains one of Marvel’s most interesting projects and is a film that- with repeated viewings- ages fairly well considering the level of apathy that was first met with during its theatrical release.
Still, there is no denying that it was- by the Marvel Studios standards- an abject failure in just about every quantifiable way, and despite its narrative richness to some, falters among that level of excellence when released on mass.
This makes this news all the more interesting, as one Eternals star has seemingly confirmed the development of a sequel, with that same Academy Award-winning director in talks to return in the same role for the follow-up.
Patton Oswalt, who was seen in the film’s post-credit scene as Pip the Troll-arriving alongside Harry Styles’s surprise appearance as Eros- made an appearance on the TODAY show, where he seemingly confirmed the news that had yet to be released to fans.
Oswalt was reported as stating (Via ComicBook.com), “They have announced there is going to be an Eternals sequel and Chloe Zhao is going to direct it, so hopefully, there will be more adventures of Starfox and Pip.”
It is an interesting development as previous comments from Marvel executives seemingly pointed to their hesitancy in bringing the characters back, and it is also worrisome that Oswalt of all people would allow the news to slip in the fashion that he did.
Only time will tell if this news is accurate, but it certainly could be one of ht planned announcements sat the high-anticipated Marvel panel at next month’s D23 event.
