Insomniac Games Shares Surprising Inspiration Behind Marvel’s Spider-Man’s Iconic Intro
We are currently in the midst of the four-year anniversary of maybe the greatest Marvel video game of all time, and to celebrate, Insomniac Games has recently shared the surprising inspiration behind Marvel’s Spider-Man’s iconic intro.
It is a moment in the gameplay that we all very much remember; the iconic intro that first introduces players of the game to this iteration of the iconic web-slinger.
For anyone who has ever played the game, it was this moment that so brilliantly brought us into this brand new hero that we both knew so well, but had never met before.
Which, in the grand scheme of all Spider-Man-related media content, seems to be the most difficult tightrope for developers and creative directors to navigate.
We all know the origin of Spider-Man, so how did these people build this world, and tell this story, so as to not bore the viewer or played with an origin that they’ve seen a hundred times, but also to make sure that they know that this incarnation is different, becomes an unenviable challenge.
But it was a challenge that the development team at Insomniac Games handled with immense creativity, and were left with a finished product that may still be the most iconic moment of the entire game.
That moment when users first load up the game, and are transported to this world of this Peter Parker, they begin to be engrained into someone completely new.
But it is the transition that makes it seamless, as before you have even been fully equated with this world and this hero, you ARE that hero, and you’re swinging from the buildings of this Peter’s New York City.
As it turns out, there is a very interesting backstory to how this memorable sequence came about, as Insomniac Games has recently revealed to IGN the surprising inspiration behind Marvel’s Spider-Man’s iconic intro.
That inspiration was none other than Back to the Future.

that’s right, the developers pulled their inspiration from one of the biggest films of all time, and the sequence that first introduces Doc Brown; an eccentric character that needed a unique introduction to the audience.
When looking at the side of the sequence by side, it is so clearly evident where this inspiration came from, and how it works so brilliantly in both cases.
