‘Shang-Chi 2’ Gets a Promising Update From Simu Liu
When Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings managed to earn $450 million at the box office during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it looked like Simu Liu was poised to become the next big Marvel star.
Largely praised by critics and fans alike, the Shang-Chi franchise appeared to be a key part of Marvel’s plans for a post-Endgame world.
Since then, however, Liu’s titular hero has been largely ignored by the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
While a Shang-Chi 2 was initially announced in December 2021, with Daniel Destin Cretton set to return to direct, three years later, we don’t seem to be any closer to the film materializing.
Simu Liu Gives a Promising Update
Even though updates on Shang-Chi 2 have been few and far between, the film is still in the works.
In a recent interview with The Press Trust of India, Liu confirmed that Shang-Chi 2 is “definitely happening.”
“A lot of it is above my pay grade but it’s definitely happening. So, just very excited to kind of work on it and it’s going to be amazing. I really can’t say anything beyond that,” he explained.
Fans Had Worried the Film Was Canceled
While Liu’s most recent comments do not reveal any new information, they are important.
When Shang-Chi 2 was not mentioned at San Diego Comic-Con or D23: The Ultimate Fan Event, fans worried that the film had been canceled.
Liu’s co-star Awkwafina also recently revealed that she had not heard anything about the potential sequel.
Marvel’s Move Away From Kang Could Be Delaying ‘Shang-Chi 2’
Initially, based on a European copyright by Marvel, the Shang-Chi was seemingly set to be titled Shang-Chi and the Wreckage of Time. The film would reportedly feature a time-travel plot and was rumored to include Iron Fist.
With Marvel pivoting away from its Kang storyline in favor of the arrival of Doctor Doom, it remains to be seen if those plans have changed.
After all, Cretton was initially expected to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty before Jonathan Majors’ legal troubles forced Marvel to change course.
If Shang-Chi 2 was originally going to feature Kang and perhaps tie into the now-scrapped Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, that could explain the film’s delay.
Still, fans can take heart that Shang-Chi 2 is still a go. How long they have to wait, however, remains to be seen.
