Dave Bautista Says He “Never Really Had Closure” After His Marvel Exit
Dave Bautista’s time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) officially came to an end with the release of last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.
After portraying Drax the Destroyer across six films and one Disney+ special, Bautista decided it was time to move on from the MCU. Looking back a year later, however, he wishes things had gone a little bit differently.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bautista revealed that the last Marvel project he worked on was The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, which was filmed concurrently with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Because of the actor’s busy schedule, Bautista had to leave the set immediately following his final scene and head to his next project.
“So our last night filming was here in Hollywood, and we wrapped at 3 or 4 in the morning. And then I literally had to run to the hotel, get my bags, jump on a jet, and fly to Philadelphia to start Knock at the Cabin two days later,” Bautista said.
“So I never really got to say goodbye to everyone. I got rushed off set to another film. And I was then on another film, and I didn’t do press or make the premiere for Guardians 3.”
“I Never Really Got To Say Goodbye”
Looking back on his Marvel finale now, Bautista feels like he never really got a chance to say goodbye.
“There’s just a huge part of me that feels like there was no closure. I never really got to say goodbye to that character and that cast, and there’s always going to be some sadness involved when I start thinking about that.”
Leading up to the release of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Bautista had been open about the fact that he was happy to be done playing Drax. Feeling that he was getting too old for the part, and did not want to go throug hthe extensive makeup sessions that portraying Drax required.
Does Bautista Miss Drax?
A year later, Bautista may not miss his character, but he does miss his Guardians of the Galaxy teammates.
“I wouldn’t say I miss [Drax],” Bautista said. “What I do miss is the family environment. It’s hard knowing that we will never be on set together again. Me, Chris, Zoe, Pom, Karen, Sean Gunn, James Gunn — it’s never going to happen again. It’s hard to live with that.”
While it sounds like Bautista is at peace with the end of his Marvel career, it would have been nice if the actor got the sendoff he deserved.
Maybe one day, we will see the Guardians of the Galaxy reunite again.
