Destin Daniel Cretton Will Direct ‘Spider-Man 4’

Perhaps the worst-kept secret at Marvel Studios is that Tom Holland will swing back into action for a fourth Spider-Man film.

While Spider-Man: No Way Home ended the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Spider-Man trilogy with everybody forgetting who Peter Parker is, Holland will soon be suiting up again. However, This time, he will have to do so without longtime director Jon Watts, who will not return for the franchise’s fourth installment.

Enter Destin Daniel Cretton

According to a new report from The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel Studios is turning to Destin Daniel Cretton, director of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, to helm the next Spider-Man film.

Once upon a time, Cretton was slated to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. However, with Marvel pivoting away from the multiversal villain following actor Jonatha Majors’ domestic abuse conviction, plans for the film were scrapped. In its place, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU for Avengers: Doomsday, with the Russo Brothers directing.

Cretton is also heading Marvel Television’s Wonder Man series, which is currently in post-production.

‘Spider-Man 4’ Will Begin Filming Next Year

While Marvel’s exact plans for Spider-Man 4 remain under wraps, Holland has previously expressed his excitement at being involved early in the film’s development.

“This is the first time in this process that I’ve been part of the creative so early. It’s just a process where I’m watching and learning. It’s just a really fun stage for me. Like I said, everyone wants it to happen. But we want to make sure we’re not overdoing the same things,” Holland explained to Deadline earlier this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man 4 will begin shooting early next year and will be based on a script written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

With Marvel Studios and Sony seemingly in agreement on the future of the Spider-Man franchise and Holland on board, it sounds like fans won’t have to wait long to see Peter Parker’s next adventure.
