Taika Waititi Doesn’t Hold Back When Asked About Criticism From Marvel Fans
While Thor: Ragnarok is not widely considered the best installment in the Thor franchise and is among the upper echelon of all Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, fans were skeptical when Taika Waititi was initially announced as the film’s director.
At the time, Waititi was relatively unknown, and there were questions about whether he had what it took to helm a Marvel film.
Eventually, Waititi proved all his naysayers wrong. Thor: Ragnarok was not only a major success, but the film breathed new life into the franchise. For his part, Chris Hemsworth credited the director with re-sparking his interest in Thor and allowing him to show off his comedic chops.
Waititi Reflects on His Early Doubters
While Waititi and Hemsworth would be unable to recreate their Ragnarok magic with Thor: Love and Thunder, the director’s time in the MCU was an undeniable success.
In a recent interview with EW, Waititi looked back at his time with Marvel and admitted that he got off to a rough start.
“That really propelled me into the nerdosphere, if you will. I was living a really lovely, peaceful life, and as soon as I did this, well boy, did the nerds come for me. They said, ‘This guy’s gonna ruin this. He’s gonna ruin Thor!’ It’s like, ‘What, you mean again?’ And they were like, ‘He’s gonna ruin this for everyone, Thor’s so cool!’ And I said to them on Twitter — before I left Twitter — I said, ‘You don’t know what you want until I give it to you.'”
The Director Made His Mark
As Waititi points out, Ragnarok’s success would propel his own career, and even the director’s early detractors had to admit that he was the right man for the job.
As previously mentioned, Waititi will not be returning to the MCU following the middling response to Thor: Love and Thunder. Nevertheless, the director has made his mark.
