WandaVision: The Series Finale
This week’s series finale of WandaVision – appropriately titled “The Series Finale” – featured a story arc ending with a heart wrenching payout for the oddest couple in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The episode is full of heartfelt maybe-goodbyes, future hellos, and lots of witch-y power.
And like most Marvel Studios’ projects, the series ended with several mid-credit scenes teasing big moments for the future of the MCU, and hopefully, for the future of Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne).
However, at the center of the ending of WandaVision is Wanda Maximoff (Olsen) coming to grips with grief, loss, and trauma by confronting her witchy foil, Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn), and the big bad shadow government, Director Hayward (Josh Stamberg).
Ultimately, Wanda, who is now the Scarlet Witch, must choose between saving her chaos-created family or saving the walking meat puppets in Westview (who had their lives ostensibly taken over by her magic when she created her sitcom reality).
And painfully, she decides to say goodbye to her entire family – for now – to make everything go back to normal for the townspeople of Westview.
The Series Finale Mid-Credit Scenes
But WandaVision fans, that wasn’t all! The series finale had TWO mid-credits scenes to keep our minds spinning until we see the end of those arcs in Captain Marvel 2 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, respectively.
After the credits start rolling, we catch up with Monica and Agent Jimmy Woo (Randall Park), who are teaming up as the clean-up crew now that things have returned to the “new normal” in Westview: Wanda is gone; Agatha Harkness is imprisoned in the role of the nose-y neighbor; and the White Vision has flown away to…somewhere?
What’s next for the Scarlet Witch and her family? The mid-credit scenes provided some clues, so read on!
Monica Meets the Skrull Agent
The first mid-credit scene is focused on Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), who is summoned by another S.W.O.R.D. Agent Skrull Agent (Lori Livingston) to the Westview movie theater (clever, very clever) for a debriefing about the events of WandaVision.
But instead of a debriefing, the Skrull Agent has a very special message from an old friend of Monica’s mom who is finally ready to meet his friend’s daughter, aka the latest superhero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spectrum! Although Monica didn’t get to show-off a lot of her new power set in the WandaVision finale, we did get a glimpse of one of her new skills – the ability to phase like Vision (Paul Bettany) does.
With Captain Marvel 2 scheduled for a November 11th, 2022 release, hopefully, we can expect more exploration of Monica’s power set in the cinematic WandaVision sequel.
So far, the speculation is that the “friend” is either Skrull Leader Talos (Ben Mendelsohn) or Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) – both of whom appeared in Captain Marvel – and may appear in the Disney+ series Secret Invasion. However, we still don’t know what that means for Monica.
The Scarlet Witch Reads the Darkhold
The second mid-credit scene focuses on Wanda Maximoff amid an array of mountains – Wundagore Mountain anyone – who is sipping a cup of tea on her porch.
However, the camera quickly pans to another room inside the “Wundagore” cottage. Once inside her bedroom, we see an astral projection of the Scarlet Witch reading the Darkhold, presumably trying to learn more about her chaos magic and how to control it, when she hears Billy and Tommy calling for help from somewhere in the multiverse.
At Marvel Blog, we already gave you a brief history of the Darkhold, both in the MCU and Marvel Comics, so check out the article “WandaVision Speculation: Gimmie that Grimoire!” for more information about what the magical tome means for the future of the Marvel Multiverse.
At Marvel Blog, we suspect the Darkhold, Chaos Magic, and the Sorcerer Supreme will all come back into play when Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally hits theaters on March 22nd, 2022.
WandaVision Series Finale and Phase 4
What does this all mean for the future of the MCU? Well, first of all, the Scarlet Witch is more powerful than the Sorcerer Supreme Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), which might explain his absence in the series finale (because really what good is an ice cream truck driver with suppressed memories of his life as Stephen Strange).
And, second of all, it means that magic is back, baby, and it’s stronger than ever!
The Scarlet Witch – who is now alone – has the time to become a truly autonomous character that’s free of the whims and persuasions of others who have tried to control her narrative for too long, and at the end of the series, she finally takes control of her birth right and harnesses the power of chaos magic.
Will Agatha Harkness eventually return to guide Wanda Maximoff on her quest for a better understanding of chaos magic? It seems likely given what we know about the character from the comics (learn more here).
What does this mean for the future of the MCU? Will Wanda and Strange be allies or enemies in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness? What roll will Agatha Harkness play in rescuing Wanda’s children? Who is Monica Rambeau going to meet in space? Let Marvel Blog know all your speculations in the comments section below!
