Review: For Blade Fans, HEROES REBORN #1 Is A Must
In Heroes Reborn #1 by Jason Aaron, Ed McGuinness, Mark Morales, Matthew Wilson, and Cory Petit, Blade the Vampire Hunter awakens in a brave new world – one that has no Avengers in it! What has caused the creation of such a world? This first issue doesn’t offer any answers, but it does give you a tour of the many ways that the Marvel Universe would differ if the Avengers had never been formed!
A Mysterious Mystery
Over the course of the first issue, readers discover that after waking up covered in dried blood in a flophouse, Blade has been exploring this world for two weeks straight, desperate to find any of the heroes he once fought alongside.
In addition to familiar characters who apparently never became heroes, like Robbie Reyes (known to Marvel Blog True Believers as Ghost Rider), the issue also introduces fans to the hoards of vampire hunters – oh wait, those don’t exist in this universe either.
In some instances, these familiar characters seem much different in Heroes Reborn #1. For example, while Agent President Phil Coulson is known to be a good man in the Marvel Comics universe, there is something decidedly villainous about the incarnation we meet here.
And speaking of villains, we get to meet several in this issue, giving readers glimpses of alternative versions of some of Marvel’s most memorable characters – that’s right, Marvel Blog True Believers, it isn’t just on Disney+ that the villains tend to steal the show, it can also be in the panels of the source material!
Do You Like Blade?
However, your interest in this story may depend on your interest in the heroes (and villains) who have been “reborn” in this universe. For example, if you like Dr. Doom or Thanos, you will be pleased to see their parallel timeline selves plenty in this issue, and if you’re a fan of Blade, well, the Daywalker gets lots of page time too.
But considering this issue gives only a slight hint of what’s to come in the subsequent tie-in issues of the Heroes Reborn event, you may not find as much to keep your interest if you aren’t already invested in the featured characters.
