REVIEW: X-Men #1 Will Hook You By Panel 2
Well, Marvel Blog True Believers, there’s no way around it: X-Men #1 by Gerry Duggan, Pepe Larraz, Marte Gracia, Clayton Cowles, and Tom Muller will hook you by the time you get done reading the first page! This issue introduces the lineup for the new X-Men team, mutantdom’s number one defenders. With a headquarters that’s appropriate for the Krakoan era and more than a few adversaries, this issue packs a serious punch!
New X-Status Quo
A big part of this issue is setting up the new status quo for the X-Men. And part of setting up the new status quo means that we get to find out all about their new Manhattan headquarters: a literal treehouse!
Crafted from bespoke Krakoan technology and transported to New York City in bonsai form (before being enlarged to eighteen stories), this completely green building gives the mutants the opportunity to be on hand whenever somebody attacks the Big Apple (and this being the Marvel Universe, that happens quite a lot).
I’m sure that any Marvel Blog True Believer will not be surprised to learn that the X-Men get a chance to show off their urban defense skills before the end of the issue, and a shout out to Wolverine, whose journey into mysterious alien guts earns her the honor of being our first X-Men MVM (that’s most valuable mutant) for this inaugural issue!
As is the standard with the X-Line these days, this issue includes multiple pages that are essentially just text, offering extensive details and exposition on the goings-on of the mutants.
Plenty of Bad Guys
This issue also gives the antagonists time to shine. It seems as though the X-Men will have their hands full with all the problems about to be thrown their way…
But I’m especially excited to see how this Gameworld business plays out, just look how cool it is!
Plus, with a bunch of amoral aliens gambling with human life, and a master of ceremonies who seems to be a fungus inhabiting a corpse, I can’t wait to see how this storyline plays out.
