REVIEW: Serenity SMASHED in GAMMA FLIGHT #2
In Gamma Flight #2 by Al Ewing, Crystal Frasier, Lan Medina, Antonio Fabela, Joe Sabino, with a main cover by Leinil Francis Yu and Sunny Gho, we see more of the battle between Skaar, the son of the Hulk, and Gamma Flight!
In Gamma Flight #2, Skaar is there to bring Dionne (who is also known as Stockpile) back to the lab where they came from, and Gamma Flight wants to stop him… but they broke their dang teleporter!
Great Fight
Much of this issue is taken up by the battle between Skaar and the members of Gamma Flight who were not successfully teleported away: Doc Samson and Titanita.
As the two heroes physically fight Skaar, they verbally spar with each other as well.
Marvel Blog True Believers, this is one of my favorite superhero tropes! I love it when superpowered characters have intimate conversations while they’re throwing down, and this issue delivers on that in spades.
Back at the Lab
I’m also a huge fan of the developments going on back at the Gamma Flight home base, especially the way that Rick Jones/Del Frye is treated by their teammates.
While Jones/Frye has a hard time communicating in the same way as everyone else (or in the way that the two individual identities contained in Jones/Frye did once upon a time), this week, we see Dr. Charlene McGowan offers some comfort to Jones/Frye.
This is a very nice detail that shows the tender and kind treatment that the other members have been offering to Jones/Frye in light of their condition (last month, we saw Puck comfort them when they became frustrated). I adore this caretaking aspect of the book and I hope we see it continue through all five issues!
More Gamma Flight in August
The next issue of Gamma Flight will arrive in August, and I cannot wait to get my hands on it! Where exactly did the team get teleported? I’m not sure, but the “next month” preview features an American Gothic parody, so maybe they’re on a farm!
