REVIEW: Another Turn Round the Clock in KANG THE CONQUEROR #1
In Kang the Conqueror #1 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, Carlos Magno, Espen Grundetjern, and Joe Caramagna, with a main cover by Mike Del Mundo, Kang takes center stage! This issue seeks to find Kang’s definitive origin – no small feat when a character is intrinsically tied to shifting timelines, like Nathaniel Richards, aka Kang!
“Only Myself Left to Conquer”
Marvel knows that you may have only learned about Kang a few weeks ago, when the final episode of Marvel Studio’s Loki’s first season aired, revealing that the person in the Citadel at the End of Time was He Who Remains… a character that might fairly be considered to be a Variant of Kang!
With that in mind, this issue attempts to begin to answer the question in every MCU fan’s mind, “Who is Kang?”
In Loki, He Who Remains is played by Jonathan Majors (who seems to be having a lot of fun in the role). Kang tells Loki and Sylvie that he’s met other versions of himself, and in Kang the Conqueror #1, we get to see that story firsthand!
Marvel has set this issue up so that it could be your first Marvel Comic, if your interest has just been piqued by the season finale of Loki and the character’s future appearance in Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, then this book’s for you.
In fact, an arresting variant cover by Peach Momoko even includes what appears to be the three Time-Keeper robots from the fourth episode of Loki, enticing fans of the show who want to learn more about the enigmatic backstory of the TVA to pick up this new comic book run about the man behind the curtain, Kang!
Naturally, with four more issues after this one in the miniseries, you only get so many answers from this first volume, but suffice to say that it’s clear that we’ll be getting more details as the series goes on!
