Real Life Superhero: Ryan Reynolds Helps ACLU & NAACP
In an email that was sent to me on Tuesday, September 22nd, 2021, Mr. Wade Wilson himself, Ryan Reynolds – A.K.A. Deadpool, A.K.A. the Merc with a Mouth, A.K.A. the Regeneratin’ Degenerate – together with his wife, Gossip Girl alum Blake Lively, pledged to match all gifts up to $1,000,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union’s (ACLU) “Democracy Building Challenge”!
We still believe in you, 2021. Let’s help @ACLU and @naacp_ldf change it together. https://t.co/G6hPBPO5Du

Now, Reynolds and Lively are challenging you to join them in pledging a donation to the ACLU and NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund (LDF). These funds will be used to help the ACLU and NAACP teams fight the never-ending battle against unjust lawsuits!
ACLU Democracy Building Challenge
Reynolds and Lively donated a one million dollar grant to the ACLU and NAACP LDF, providing resources the teams need in order to continue the fight in defense of civil liberties for all.
As detailed in the email from the ACLU, “Both organizations work on the frontlines defending democracy and protecting the civil rights of all Americans – and that couldn’t be a more critical fight to support right now.”
Clearly, Reynolds and Lively recognize the importance of the organization’s work as the couple has supported to the LDF before, donating $200,000 to the NAACP after George Floyd was heinously murdered on May 25, 2020.
Reynolds & Lively Help Others
The couple is known for their philanthropic efforts.
In March 2020, the two actors personally reached out to four of New York’s hardest-hit hospitals to gift them $100,000 each at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Then, earlier this year, it was announced that they donated $1 million to food banks across the United States and Canada, and later pledged another $500,000 to Feeding America and Food Banks Canada.
Just as the heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are at their strongest when they band together and cooperate, it’s obvious that a team-up will be the best possible option here in the real world too! And just like Robert Downey, Jr.’s FootPrint Coalition, it’s clear that Reynolds is invested in parlaying his cultural impact into some legitimate, world-changing good!
Reynolds the Hero
Reynolds is no stranger to going out of his way in order to achieve his goals. For example, the first Deadpool movie was only greenlit after a “mysterious source” leaked the teaser trailer during SDCC 2015.
And if you just can’t wait for more on-screen Deadpool, you’re in luck: Reynolds has suggested that the R-rated Deadpool 3 will begin filming in 2022.
Will you be accepting the challenge issued by Reynolds and Lively and making your own donation to the ACLU & NAACP LDF? We want to hear from you, Marvel Blog True Believers! Give us a shout-out in the comment section.
