The Songwriters Behind Hawkeye’s ROGERS Musical Speak Out
In an article posted to the official Marvel website on Wednesday, November 10th, 2021, the songwriters behind the Rogers Broadway Musical, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, spoke out about their experiences writing the song that will be featured on Hawkeye.
A Musical Bullseye
In the trailers for the upcoming Hawkeye Marvel Cinematic Universe series on Disney+, we’ve glimpsed a Marvelous musical number that we’ll get to enjoy when the first two episodes of Hawkeye premiere on November 24th, 2021!
According to the interview with Shaiman and Wittman, the duo co-wrote the lyrics, while Shaiman also produced the recording of the musical number. Shaiman explains that the foundations for the Rogers musical number began to come together when Marvel Studios Head Boss in Charge Kevin Feige approached Shaiman at an Academy Award dinner. Feige is a fan of fim scores, and he recognized Shaiman and had to introduce himself!
The pair continued to swap emails, with Shaiman letting Feige know when he had seen a Marvel movie. And then, when the concept of including a musical number in Hawkeye arose, Feige thought of Shaiman and invited him to pitch on the idea.
According to Shaiman, his husband played a key role in the creation of the song, thanks to the fact that he possesses an encyclopaedic knowledge of the Marvel multiverse.
According to Wittman and Shaiman, they were working on the song back in 2020, during the height of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The duo says that the “save our city” vibe that could not be escaped at that time directly informed the lyrics they wrote for Rogers.
Fortunately, while COVID-19 continues to make visiting real-life theaters a no-go for immunocompromised people like me, I’m really looking forward to seeing the Rogers musical when it safely streams on Disney+ later this month!
A Musical Hero
Hopefully, the music of Hawkeye will be available to listen to after the episode, much like the show stopping tunes that accompanied my personal favorite Disney+ series so far, WandaVision.
