RETRO REVIEW: Get That Tape in Hawkeye (2012) #4
In Hawkeye (2012) #4 by Matt Fraction, Javier Pulido, Matt Hollingsworth, and Chris Eliopoulous, with a cover by David Aja, we find out that S.H.I.E.L.D. has a videotape that shows none other than Hawkeye himself, Clint Barton, shooting a pair of arrows that kill one of the most dangerous terrorists on the planet.
Did Hawkeye really kill that guy? How far will he go to get the video tape back? What could motivate him to take part in such dirty dealings? Let’s find out, Marvel Blog True Believers!
This Looks Bad
This issue is considerably more “superhero-y” than the previous three issues of the series, in that Clint is getting tied up in world-level machinations and espionage rather than just tussling on the street level with the Tracksuit Mafia.
To that end, this issue sends Clint to Madripoor! Anyone who watched Captain America and the Winter Soldier on Disney+ will be familiar with this locale (and you’ll be especially familiar with it if you followed Marvel Blog’s coverage when that episode aired).
On top of that, we get to see another batch of supervillains (just like in issue two… how does Clint get into these situations).
Finally, if you’ve been reading this series since issue one, you’ll notice that the art inside this issue is very different than the first three issues. That’s thanks to the fact that Pulido rotated in to cover interiors in lieu of Aja on this two-issue story arc. Pulido will be back in a future issue of Hawkeye, and we’ll see the work of some other amazing artists on the title before we’ve made it all the way through all 22 issues, Marvel Blog True Believers!
Hawkeye Available on Marvel Unlimited
If you want to read this issue for yourself (and every issue in this series comes highly recommended), then head over to Marvel Unlimited and check it out! However, note that although the letters column remains intact, there is no song recommendation for this issue… Probably because those generally have come from Aja, who only provided the cover for this issue.
This issue is a two-parter, so you can bet that you’ll want to head right into Hawkeye #5 when you’ve finished it!
