‘Shang-Chi’ Director Destin Daniel Cretton Returning to Marvel; Signs Exclusive Mulit-Year Deal
One of the great successes of Marvel’s 2021 film slate was the dominant Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings; it appears the director of the film has found a home as Destin Daniel Cretton is returning to Marvel, signing an exclusive multi-year deal with the studio and Disney affiliates.
Shang-Chi was a project that some anticipated to fail; with its source material being some of the more obscure in comics, and its film’s lead being an actor from relative obscurity, the film seemed to be destined to underwhelm a rabid Marvel audience.
Boy where most people wrong.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ended up being a colossal accomplishment for Marvel Studios; with its focus on honoring the past of martial arts films, and its charismatic frontman, Simu Liu, becoming a star in the making, it was a bonafide hit for the studio.
A massive part of that success was undoubtedly the director of the film Destin Daniel Cretton, whose penchant for beautiful visuals, an engaging and emotional narrative, and an understanding of how to pay homage to the great eastern storytelling of cinema history, Cretton is one of Marvels brightest storytellers.
And it appears Destin Daniel Cretton is returning to Marvel to finish what he started.
It has been reported by Deadline.com that the acclaimed director, “has entered into an exclusive multi-year overall deal with Disney companies Marvel Studios and Hulu’s Onyx collective.”
On top of Cretton’s return to the Studio to continue bringing his incredible talent as a director back to the MCU, Deadline also reports that “the filmmaker is already in development with Marvel Studios on a new MCU series for Disney+.”
But wait, there’s more.
It has also been officially announced by Marvel and Disney that Cretton will head the often rumored sequel to the adored 2021 Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
We cant wait to see what Cretton is yet to accomplish with Marvel Studios and the incredibly beautiful stories he has yet to tell.
