RETRO REVIEW: Infinity War (1992) #1
One of the comics that served as integral inspiration for one of the biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe movies of all time, Infinity War, came out thirty years ago, in 1992!
Three decades later, Marvel Blog is taking a look at the watershed Infinity War (1992) #1 by Jim Starlin, Ron Lim, Al Milgrom, Max Scheele, Ian Laughlin, and Jack Morelli!
Infinity War (1992) #1
There are some parts of this issue that will seem very familiar to fans of the 2018 movie Avengers: Infinity War and its 2019 direct sequel, Avengers: Endgame. One of these things is the Thanos scarecrow that opens the very first issue. This memorable image will definitely stand-out, whether you first saw it in this comic or on the big screen!
Another thing that is similar is the fact that Thanos has his perspective foregrounded, and is kind of the “hero” of the issue. This might seem strange to you at first, but if you think about it, that’s kind of how the Infinity War movie worked, too: it followed Thanos as he completed his goal of gathering the Infinity Stones and then retiring to a remote planet.
However, this issue also has some things that are very different from anything we saw on-screen in Infinity War or Endgame. This includes our familiar superheroes facing off against nightmare semi-duplicates of themselves! While we didn’t get to see this on-screen yet, I hope we do at some point in the future of the MCU, because it provided plenty of interesting battles.
