REVIEW: Stick Together in Darkhold: Spider-Man #1
In Darkhold: Spider-Man #1 by Alex Paknadel, Dio Neves, Jim Charalampidis, and Clayton Cowles, with a main cover by James Harren & Dave Stewart, we get a story that sees Peter Parker on the verge of unraveling! This story is just as dark as the other entries in the Darkhold crossover event, so be forewarned: this comic is not for the faint of heart!
“Tensile Strength”
First of all, the concept of this issue is fantastic. In this timeline, the world just started spontaneously “unraveling.” Buildings and people just started to fall apart. It’s up to Parker to keep everyone webbed together…
And this is all just horrifying! Over the course of this issue we witness Peter helping multiple different people – innocents and antagonists alike – with a tender sense of responsibility. Which is sort of awful, due to the terrible tragedy that has befallen everyone.
The best part about this horrific tale is that it comes out of Parker’s character. We all know that Peter is perpetually “stretched too thin” and making an effort to “keep those around him together.” Well, this is what happens when you tell that story through a truly horrific lens!
As the final story in the semi-anthology that is the Darkhold crossover, this tale combines many of the aspects of previous entries (like the character-driven element of Darkhold: Iron Man, the interesting thematic exploration of Darkhold: The Wasp, the strange new world of Darkhold: Blade, and the dark conclusive moments of Darkhold: Black Bolt).
Overall, this crossover has been a lot of horrifying fun!
