The ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ Appearance That Never Was…
One of the biggest films of the year, the latest installment of Peter Parker’s Marvel Cinematic Universe saga brought together some of the iconic characters of the hero’s past. In an interview with Variety, two of the movie’s screenwriters, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers discuss the film, and the Spider-Man: No Way Home appearance that never was.
The movie event of the year, Spider-Man: No Way Home stands as perhaps the most anticipated MCU film to date, while, in my opinion, also being one of the best Peter Parker adaptations ever created.
Featuring 20 years of the character’s on-screen history, Spider-Man: No Way Home Brough back some of the character’s most iconic villains to wreak havoc on the MCU’s Peter Parker in a story that was brutal and emotionally resonant.
With the character facing the likes of Willem Defoe‘s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina‘s Doc Ock, and Jaime Foxx‘s Electro, our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man might have been in over his head!
Thankfully he had some help.
In what was perhaps the worst kept secret in Hollywood was the reprisal of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker(s) in the multiversal adventure. The moment was truly one of the most iconic in the MCU’s history.
With Ned summoning both characters into the MCU, it turns out there was actually originally going to be a very different MCU character bringing the two other Spider-Men into the fold.
Speaking with Variety, screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers revealed more details about the Spider-Man: No Way Home appearance that never was; and the character that was originally meant to help the audience understand the past Spider-Man reappearances.
“They are brought by a Marvel character going, ‘Here are the saving graces and they’re going to help you through this,” McKenna states, “It was just more of a Deus Ex Machina.”
The writing duo wouldn’t state who the character was, only that the scene carried well into the production of the film; until they finally decided during the Christmas holiday of last year, that the movie needed something with less of a gimmick.
“It was a beam of light in the darkness, it was such a gift, particularly at that point in the writing process, to be writing for those two characters,” Mckenna continued, “It was the darkest part of the year, the darkest part of the production, the darkest part pf the story development, and it was like, Oh! Now we get Tobey and Andrew.”
Although they don’t share just how the character was, it is fair to assume it was a character with a very vast knowledge of the multiverse; with Wong or Loki as strong possibilities.
It would have lessened the moment, to have one of those two characters simply explain why Tobey and Andrew’s version of Spider-Man was present, with the moment of MJ and Ned talking through the occurrences acting in a much more endearing and entertaining story.
What do you think? Would you have wanted to see Wong or Loki introduce the past Spider-Men? Who do you think was the Spider-Man: No Way Home appearance that never was? Let us know!
