The series was assumed to be picking up where the What If…? episode left off, in which the multiversal MArvel universe was overrun by a zombie apocalypse, and it turns out that may be a part of what fans can expect.
Marvel executive Bryan Andrews discussed the series as an opportunity for the creatives behind the show to delve deeper into that world that was introduced in that episode while delving into more Marvel characters that we know from the main Marvel Cinematic Universe.

During the announcement, it was made clear that there will be two major factions that are expressed in the series, with recurring characters for both; the heroes, and the zombies.
The zombies of the series will be constituted by Hawkeye, Abomination, Ghost, Captain America, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, and Okoye; which will be incredibly interesting considering how immensely powerful many of those characters are.

The hero side of the series will be represented by Yelena Belova, Katy, Kate Bishop, Jimmy Woo, Death Dealer, Shang-Chi, and Kamala Khan; which also adds to the intrigue because of the various backgrounds of these characters, and that we’ve never seen them in an animated project yet.
The series will also implement MCU collectives like the Widows, and the Skrulls, and feature Ikaris from the Eternals in some form; with the most interesting announcement that the series will be the first TV-MA project Marvel has ever developed.

The panel concluded by noting that it was the gore that made the comic book so great, and they don’t want to shy away from that in this adaptation.
