‘She/ Hulk’ Writer and Director Talk the Journey of Jennifer Walters
With the series arriving today, it is officially time for Marvel fans to meet the newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe; and to celebrate, She/ Hulk writer, Jessica Gao, and director Kat Coiro have discussed the journey of Jennifer Walters, and why she’s so different than Bruce Banner.
It was a long time coming, but Jennifer Walter’s MCU debut is finally here and boy was it fantastic; as the young lawyer brought forth something that feels so fresh, yet so at home, in the massive and ever-expanding film universe.
With the project arriving, and fans meeting the eponymous character for the first time, there is a lot that makes her different from the cousin who gave her powers, and in a recent interview with ComicBook.com, She/ Hulk writer Jessica Gao and director Kat Coiro discuss the journey of Jennifer Walters.
Speaking of the character, Gao stated, “I think people receive Jen very differently when She/ Hulk than they do Jen Walters, and that’s something that Jem I think feeds off of in a way that she does get, you know, a little hit of confidence.”
“It’s fun to be looked at like that,” Gao continued, “But then at the same time, I feel like she also has a fraudulent sort of feeling around it. Or she doesn’t totally feel like she can own that and that people might not be looking at her, but looking at just She/ Hulk.”
Director Kat Coiro then stated, “That to me is one of the most interesting questions that the series poses is you know, Jennifer Walters is so different from Bruce Banner when she hulks out, she maintains her identity, but her identity is also affected by the way that shes perceived and the way people look at her.”
Coiro added, “And there’s a moment in the pilot when she gets out of Bruce’s saw machine, and she kind of does a little shimmy and feels like this new body for the first time, and there were a lot of discussions with Tatiana about, you know, what that meant, what does it mean to present so different but still feel like the same person on the inside. And that’s a huge part of her journey.”
It is definitely interesting to consider that Walters is embracing a brand new kind of status in the MCU, with her being a Hulk, but a very different Hulk, and being a character that experiences that much differently from Bruce Banner.
