Black Panther 2 Director Ryan Coogler Calls Namor “a Dream Antagonist”
With the character’s MCU debut just two months away, director Ryan Coogler has called Namor “A dream antagonist,” for his upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.
There are few characters in the history of Marvel lore that have experienced the longevity of Namor the Sub-Mariner, a MArvel creation that has been present since the 1930s.
A hero that is known as the ruler of the mythical underwater city of Atlantis, he has been written as a villain, a hero, and everything in between during his time within the Marvel mythos.
The character has been known for his distrust and hatred for surface dwellers, and for his own adoration for his own people; something that makes him a fierce opponent, and an exceptional king.
Fans have long awaited the arrival of that character to the lauded Marvel Cinematic Universe, and with his debut coming in just two months with the arrival of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, director Ryan Coogler has recently described Namor as “a dream antagonist.”
Speaking to Empire, Coogler stated, “The contrast between T’Challa and Namor- their characters, and their nations- just leap off the page,” he concluded with the statement, “He’s a dream antagonist.”
Throughout the character’s history, he has had plenty of confrontations with Black Panther, which has led to their rivalry often being cited by fans as one of Marvel’s best.
The two have often been at odds, and with his arrival in the MCU, that confrontation is able to take center stage in the live-action film world, even though we may never be able to see Chadwick Boseman’s T’Challa go head to head against Tenoch Huerta’s Namor.
It does seem as though Coogler and Kevin Feige are working hard at making this character a faithful adaption of the comic book creation that has been an iconic member of the Marvel pantheon for decades.
