‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’ Showrunner Teases Familiar Faces and New Twists
Following up on the success of What If…? and X-Men ’97, Marvel Studios is set to expand their animated canon with Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.
While the series will not focus on the same Peter Parker that Tom Holland has played in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it will aim to present a relatable Spider-Man to fans.
In a recent interview on the Official Marvel Podcast, showrunner Jeff Trammell explained that his goal with the new series was to create moments for kids who are being introduced to Spider-Man, while also surprising older fans who think they have seen it all.
“I want to give a cliche ‘expect the unexpected’ answer. But, honestly I think you can expect Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. It’s him, he’s hanging around New York. It’s not like a huge intergalactic adventure, it’s him just like at his roots. And there’s a lot of things, that I think, we as a fan base kind of take at a first glance. Like, ‘Oh yeah I know this works I know that’s part of the story.'”
Surprises Are in Store For Fans
While Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will tread familiar ground, Trammell warns fans not to presume too much.
“That’s been really fun to dig into,” Trammell added. “Well, maybe you don’t know everything. Or maybe, there are certain things that you’re kind of like ‘Oh yeah, I know that part. No surprise there.’ And, I’m really excited to dig into those, because it’s really fun to be able to subvert those expectations when they’ve been built up for so long.”
A Different Peter Parker
The Peter Parker in Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man will have a similar backstory to Tom Holland’s character, but with one major difference.
Instead of meeting Tony Stark and being offered the Stark internship, Peter instead comes into contact with Norman Osborne, who takes him under his wing.
A Collection of Characters
Without giving anything away, Trammell teased that it will not only be Peter whose story the new series tells.
“There are twists and turns in that show that are amazing, but the real power is the ensemble, is the neighborhood,” Winderbaum teased. “He’s amped that up in such a major way playing with characters like — not just Peter Parker — Nico Minoru, Lonnie Lincoln, my personal favorite, Harry Osborn, and others that flesh out this teenage ensemble.”
At this time, we do not have a release date for Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the series is expected to debut later this year.
