Ryan Reynolds Says If Deadpool Comes Back “It’s Going to Be in Someone Else’s Movie”
Following the historic success of Deadpool & Wolverine, the prevailing notion is that Marvel would quickly work to get more Deadpool films in production.
Having delivered the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time and perhaps pulling the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) back from the brink, however, Ryan Reynolds is ready to take a break.
During a recent conversation with Andrew Garfield as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Reynolds discussed the future of the Merc with a Mouth.
“My feeling is that that character works very well in two ways: scarcity and surprise,” Reynolds told Garfield. “It’s been six years since the last one and part of the reason is that it swallows my whole life.”
Balancing Work and Life
As the process of creating a Deadpool film is so all-consuming for Reynolds, he has to balance his love of the character with his responsibilities to his wife, Blake Lively, and their four kids.
“I don’t ever want to be absentee and I don’t ever want to miss stuff [in their lives],” he added. “So I don’t know what the future of Deadpool will be.”
In addition to the toll making a Deadpool film takes on Reynolds, the other problem with jumping back into the anti-heroes story comes from narrative constraints.
“It’s important sometimes to make space for a movie to just be a movie,” he continued.
“The other thing is, I see Deadpool as a supporting much more than he is a main [character], the center. We center him sometimes because that’s what they want, but you can’t center him unless you take everything away from him. You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.”
How Deadpool Could Return
If Deadpool returns (he will), Reynolds believes he would be best utilized as part of another character’s story.
“So I think if he comes back, it’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum was so excited to play Gambit [in Deadpool & Wolverine], and I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie or anyone else’s.”
With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems likely that we will see Deadpool pop up again soon.
However, it sounds like Reynold’s foul-mouthed hero will be playing sidekick for the foreseeable future.
