‘Eternals’ Star Gemma Chan Is Optimistic About Returning to the MCU
When Eternals hit theaters in 2021, it seemed like the Marvel Cinematic Universe was about to expand in an exciting new direction.
Directed by Chloé Zhao, Eternals introduced audiences to a group of ten superpowered beings who had been embedded on Earth since 5000 BC. By adding Ajak, Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, and Thena to the Marvel world, we appeared to be on the dawn of a new era.

Then, it all fell apart.
‘Eternals’ Has Been Largely Ignored
Released during the COVID-19 pandemic, Eternals struggled in theaters and proved divisive amongst Marvel fans.
Perhaps more notably, nearly four years after the film hit theaters, none of the film’s main cast has appeared in a live-action Marvel project. Additionally, many of the future stories that the film teased, including the looming threat of Arishem, the introduction of Eros, and the Dwayne Whitman assuming the Ebony Blade have seemingly been discarded.

For fans of Eternals, it has been a disappointing few years.
Gemma Chan Is “Keeping the Faith”
Despite the cloud of uncertainty hovering over the future of the Eternals, Gemma Chan remains optimistic.
In a recent interview with Comicbook, the actress, who plays Sersi in the MCU admitted that she believes there are still more stories to tell.

“You never know. We’re often the last people to find out,” Chan said. “I don’t know, I’m keeping the faith,” she said. “I feel like there’s unfinished business there and there’s more story to tell, but we’ll see.”
Marvel Could Use the Eternals Again
As Chan notes, there are still numerous ways that Marvel could integrate the Eternals into future stories. With the multiverse set to come together for the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars it would not be surprising to see the collective return.

While Eternals 2 does not sound like it is in the cards, as Captain America: Brave New World showed, the events of the first Eternals film continue to have implications in the broader MCU.

Hopefully, we will see Sersei, Ikaris, Kingo and the other Eternals return.
