Scarlett Johansson Reveals Why She Will Not Be Returning For ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
One of the biggest questions leading up to the release of Avengers: Doomsday has been the status of Scarlett Johansson.
After playing Natasha Romanoff in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for almost a decade, Johansson’s story seemingly ended with her character’s heroic death in Avengers: Endgame.

Two years later, however, Johansson suited up as Black Widow again for a standalone film.
Will Black Widow Return For ‘Doomsday’?
With the Marvel multiverse set to come together for the events of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, many fans have held out hope that we could somehow see Johansson return as Romanoff, perhaps even alongside her fellow original Avengers.

While Johansson has made it clear at every opportunity that she is done playing Black Widow, the veil of secrecy surrounding Marvel has continued to keep hope alive.
Now, the actress has made her most definitive statement yet.
Johansson Weighs In
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Johansson was asked again if she would consider returning to the MCU.

“It would be very hard for me to understand in what capacity [returning] would make sense for me, for the character that I play,” Johansson said. “I miss my buddies and really would love to be with them forever, but what works about the character is that her story is complete. I don’t want to mess with that. For fans, too — it’s important for them.”
The Right Call
Despite how exciting it would be to see Natasha Romanoff again in the MCU, Johansson is correct in her assessment.
Having Natasha show up again, even if it was a variant of the original character, would undermine Black Widow’s sacrifice in Endgame.

Going forward, Marvel needs to tread lightly when bringing back some of its deceased beloved characters. While it would certainly drive box office results, it would also undermine the franchise’s stakes.
