WANDAVISION: Extended Trailer Teases Ep. 4
Ahead of tomorrow’s highly anticipated fourth episode of WandaVision, Marvel Studios has released an extended clip trailer. Although the series has mostly been a LOST-style sitcom (except one of the character’s has actually been dead the whole time) so far, the latest trailer features Teyonah Parris’ Monica Rambeau, Randall Park’s Jimmy Woo, and Kat Dennings’ Dr. Darcy Lewis. And if it’s not obvious from THAT line-up, the trailer introduces us to S.W.O.R.D. for the first time in the series.
Check out the extended trailer above, and then read some of MarvelBlog’s theories below!
We just don’t know what to expect! Or do we…
So far, the televised event for the Scarlet Witch and her synthezoid husband has taken fans through the decades, exploring sitcoms tropes from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. But the extended trailer for tomorrow’s episode indicates that the show is finally going to explore what’s happening behind the sitcom sheen, or rather the bubble around it…
If you’ll recall at the end of the third episode, Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda threw Geraldine out of Westview for bringing up her dead twin brother, Pietro (A.K.A. Quicksilver) – who died at the hands of Ultron in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron.
And the trailer picks up with Geraldine just outside of Westview, confirming the theory that she is the grown-up daughter of Captain Marvel’s Maria Rambeau, Monica (who is also a superhero in the comics). If last week’s necklace wasn’t enough of a hint for you, it’s worth pointing out that Monica is indeed wearing a S.W.O.R.D. badge in the trailer, which presumably means she’s part of the Sentient Weapon Observation and Response Department (the organization’s name was changed for the show).
But, what is S.W.O.R.D. again???
S.W.O.R.D. is the extra-terrestrial sister-agency to S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel fans were first introduced to S.W.O.R.D. in 2004’s X-Men by Joss Whedon (who also directed Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which made an allusion to S.W.O.R.D. in the episode Orientation Part One, with Agent Yo Yo Rodriguez asking Phil Coulson, “So, wait, S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t have a space division called S.P.E.A.R. or something?“).
However, the official first appearance of the organization in the MCU is at end of Spider-Man: Far From Home. At the end of the second Spider-Man movie, the post-credits scene hinted at the organization’s existence with a clip of Samuel L. Jackson‘s Nick Fury and a legion of friendly Skrulls on spaceship.
And with S.H.I.E.L.D. dissolved, it seems like Agent Jimmy Woo has joined Nick Fury and S.W.O.R.D., or at least that’s what the trailer indicates.
What is S.W.O.R.D. doing in Westview?
In the fourth episode, it looks like fans will finally get to see the triumphant return of Dr. Darcy Lewis, who presumably earned her doctorate in political science from Culver University since we last saw her. After graduating from being Jane Foster’s intern in Thor and Thor: Dark World, Dr. Lewis is seemingly the head researcher helping S.W.O.R.D. with the Westview situation.
However, why S.W.O.R.D. needs a consultant who specializes in political science is still a mystery, but it might have to do with the reality the witch has created for herself. Besides, after watching an episode or two of Criminal Minds, I know it’s important to bring in all sorts of specialists to build a proper profile…which brings me to my final point…
Those S.W.O.R.D. dossiers…
If you check out the board with the S.W.O.R.D. dossiers on Westview’s inhabitants, the agents have identified every single town person by their driver’s license except Kathryn Hahn’s Agnes and Emma Caufield Ford’s Dottie (the latter of which doesn’t seem to have a dossier at all). Hmm…
The drivers licenses are all from New Jersey, which is a fun homage to the comics that WandaVision is based on. In the Vision and the Scarlet Witch comic that influenced the show, the couple moved to the suburbs of Leonia, New Jersey, after fleeing the U.S. government, getting married, and retiring from the Avengers.
As usual, Marvel really packed it in with the 53-second clip trailer! After the end of last week’s episode, it seems like tomorrow will be a wild ride. Are you looking forward to it? Let MarvelBlog know in the comments section below!
