What’s Next for MONICA RAMBEAU?
In the mid-credits sequence for WandaVision‘s final episode, “The Series Finale,” released for streaming on Friday, March 5th, 2021, we got to see Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) meet up with a shapeshifting ally, setting up the character’s role in Captain Marvel 2, currently scheduled for release in theaters on November 11th, 2022.
Not sure what all the details in that very meaningful scene could mean for the future of Spectrum? Never fear: Marvel Blog has you covered!
Captain Marvel (2019)
The character of Monica first appeared in the original Captain Marvel (2019), where her younger version was played by Akira Akbar. Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) is close friends with Monica’s mother, Maria (Lashana Lynch), leading to interactions between Captain Marvel and the young Monica.
Captain Marvel also introduced the Skrulls, a race of shapeshifting aliens who are initially considered enemies but eventually prove to be allies.
One of the important story developments that takes place in WandaVision is the revelation that Maria was not snapped by Thanos, while Monica was.
However, Maria died from cancer during the five years that is now considered to be “the blip.” As a result, when Monica returned from being dusted (which we saw in WandaVision Episode 4,
“We Interrupt This Program”), Maria had been dead for several years, having passed away without knowing that the snap would eventually be undone and her daughter would return.
Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)
Another element to consider is the post-credits scene from Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019). In that scene, we discover that Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is currently stationed on a large Skrull ship, somewhere in space.
What could that mean? At Marvel Blog, we are still holding out the slim hope that timelines will collide and Nick Fury will soon be joined by the cast of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (who we last saw in space).
The Coronet
In the season finale of WandaVision, an agent retrieves Monica after the climactic showdown that took place between Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) and Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) in “The Series Finale.”
The agent leads Monica into the Coronet theater, which even has a projection on screen (like you would expect to see before your movie begins). The setting is a nice little Easter egg to remind you that while the Disney+ shows are definitely connected to the big screen Marvel Cinematic Universe, there’s nothing like that big screen experience (and that’s where Monica will be appearing next – on the big screen in 2022, when we can all go back to theaters in a post COVID-19 world).
Next, the agent reveals herself to be a Skrull and tells Monica that she’s been sent by a friend of her mother’s (while this could be several people, it seems like Carol Danvers and Nick Fury are the two strongest candidates… watch Captain Marvel on Disney+ if you aren’t sure why).
Ad Astra, Monica Rambeau
Thanks to her new power set, gained in part thanks to her comings-and-goings in and out of the Westview Hex, grown-up Monica is ready to make her big-screen debut in Captain Marvel 2.
And while we got some tantalizing hints about the complicated emotional arc her character is about to embark on – like the way she bites her lip when Carol’s name is mentioned – we are really looking forward to seeing her character fully unpacked in the movie theater!
