Happy Birthday, Marvelous Benedict Cumberbatch!
Today, July 19th, 2021, is the day that Benedict Cumberbatch is celebrating his birthday! So, let’s celebrate the birthday of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most heroic Sorcerer Supreme alongside him!
Earth Has Wizards Now
Cumberbatch first played the role of Doctor Stephen Strange in 2016’s Doctor Strange, directed by Scott Derrickson. The script was written by Derrickson, Jon Spaihts, and C. Robert Cargill (although Community and Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon also contributed to some scenes).
Cumberbatch reprised the role of the Sorcerer Supreme in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame, and he’ll be appearing again in the upcoming sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which will be directed by Sam Raimi (in fact, Raimi put a Dr. Strange reference in 2004’s Spider-Man 2, so this connection has been a long time coming).
Currently, the Doctor Strange sequel is scheduled for release on March 25th, 2022, this sequel is written by Jade Bartlett and Michael Waldron (who also wrote the script for Loki, so you can expect things to get weird).
Before his sequel hits theaters, Strange is also slated to appear in Spider-Man 3: No Way Home.
Everyone is Horrid Except Me (And Possibly You)
Cumberbatch is an accomplished actor who has appeared in many other roles, including the eccentric private investigator, Sherlock Holmes, alongside his fellow Marvel Cinematic Universe co-star Martin Freeman, who plays Watson to Cumberbatch’s Holmes. After the Sherlock star received a nomination, he even received a new title from Queen Elizabeth herself, Commander of the Order of the British Empire!
However, he deserves a BIG special shout-out for his performance in a very special episode of The Simpsons. In the season thirty-two episode “Panic on the Streets of Springfield,” Cumberbatch played the role of Quilloughby, a self-absorbed musician who becomes a fixation for Lisa (Yeardly Smith).
Listen to Cumberbatch perform the role of a lifetime below:
Over the course of the episode, we get to hear Cumberbatch perform multiple songs in the Quilloughby persona, which is a hilarious delight.
Happy Birthday, Benedict Cumberbatch!
