Marvelous Zendaya Wins CFDA Fashion Icon Award
In an article posted to Glamour Magazine UK on Thursday, November 11th, 2021, it was reported that, at twenty-five years of age, Zendaya has become the youngest ever recipient of the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA)’s Fashion Icon award.
Fashion Icon MJ
Naturally, Marvel Blog True Believers may be most familiar with Zendaya thanks to her role in the Tom Holland Spider-Man trilogy, in which she plays MJ (a fact somewhat hidden until the concluding moments of the first entry, 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming).
Not only did Zendaya appear in the second, 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home, but she will also be appearing in the highly-anticipated forthcoming threequel, Spider-Man: No Way Home (in fact, she’s even getting her own LEGO minifig to mark the occasion).
MJ (or Mary Jane) has always been something of a fashion icon, including in previous movie iterations, where the role was played by Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone.
Zendaya has come a long way, fashion-wise: when she attended her first movie red capet premiere at the age of fourteen, she was wearing clothes from Target. But she stands by the decision: “I thought I was fly. I felt cool,” she told InStyle. “To this day, I think that’s really all that matters.”
In a 2015 roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter, Zendaya’s stylist, Law Roach, revealed that once upon a time, certain major fashion designers wouldn’t dress the Marvelous fashion icon… but now that she’s “made it,” they won’t stop knocking on her door.
“Not this season!” Roach has told the shortsighted designers.
Sadly, this isn’t an unprecedented incident. When Beyoncé won the 2016 CFDA Fashion Icon award, she reflected on how high-end labels would not dress the musicians in the legendary group Destiny’s Child once upon a time.
However, hopefully future considerations will take into account the lessons learned from these missteps!
