The Avengers star will headline the special Shark Beach. He’ll speak with marine biologists, surfers, conservation activists, and shark advocates in Australia. Hemsworth will work to determine why there has been an increase in shark attacks around Australia in recent years. Ultimately, Hemsworth and Nat Geo will work together to to uncover ways that sharks and humans can coexist together.
WHY Swim with Sharks?
Sharks are a really misunderstood and crucial species that make our oceans healthy. Marine biologists often consider sharks to be keystone species–basically, they are vital to keeping ocean ecosystems in balance.

Without sharks, fish populations would be out of control, could quickly deplete their food supply, and ultimately cause ecosystems to crash. Sharks feed on the sick, injured, malformed, and just plain unlucky fish in order to ensure the oceans stay healthy.

“I’ve spent a great deal of my life near or in the ocean, sharing the same backyard with sharks, and recently there’s been some growing concern regarding an increase in shark activity,” said Hemsworth. “It’s crucial that we both revere and respect sharks. Our oceans depend on these apex predators for a biodiverse ecosystem; however, we must also learn how to protect ourselves, and that’s my main objective in Shark Beach.”
What we’ll learn
It’s important for us to understand shark behaviors–very few shark species will be seen near shore for instance. In the Shark Beach special, we’ll see our favorite super hero stand up and fight for these important species. He’ll also join marine biologists to discover various efforts to prevent humans from interacting with sharks and protect both!
What we here at MarvelBlog love about this special–super cool filmmakers, nerdy scientists, and geeky comic book heroes are swimming with sharks to make the undersea world a better place. Fame is a powerful tool and we’re so grateful to see Thor’s great power be used to raise awareness for some of the most vulnerable fish in the ocean.
Put a BOLO out for this shark-tastic special!
“Sharkfest has become the port of call for A-list scientists and filmmakers who share our passion for sharks and the health of the planet’s oceans. In success, we’re also drawing in celebrity thought leaders who have the power to raise awareness and impact behavior through their incredible social platforms,” sad Geoff Daniels, Executive VP of Global Unscripted Entertainment at National Geographic. “That’s why I couldn’t be more excited about Shark Beach and our latest collaboration with Chris Hemsworth. He’s a fearless defender of nature with a proven commitment to conservation and has an unrivaled willingness to do whatever it takes to help protect sharks for generations to come.”
Be on the lookout for this skark-tastic special coming to a swimming on to a screen near you next summer.
