New Director Named for Captain Marvel 2
According to an exclusive report from Deadline, Nia DaCosta has been named director of Captain Marvel 2.
Neither Disney nor Marvel Studios have commented on the news. However, the studio is known for hiring new directors for follow-up films in the franchise, such as Thor and Iron Man. This often gives the films a fresh perspective.
DaCosta will take over for Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who directed the first Captain Marvel film. The script for Captain Marvel 2 was written by Megan McDonnell, a story editor on the Disney+ series WandaVision. Brie Larson will return in the title role.
Who is Nia DaCosta?
Nia DaCosta is a rising star. She broke onto the indie scene after directing the 2019 critical acclaimed film Little Woods. The crime-thriller-western starred Tessa Thompson and Lily James.
Before that, she directed several episodes of Top Boy, a British crime drama.
Furthermore, producer Jordan Peele hand-picked DaCosta to direct his retelling of Candyman. The film’s release has been pushed back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but its first trailer set social media on fire. Fans are excited to see her take on the 1992 horror film when it makes it way to theaters.
Female Directors Rule the Superhero Roost
As we’ve reported, Marvel is committed to expanding diversity among its casts and crews. While Captain Marvel 2’s budget is unknown, it will surely be one of the biggest-budget films with a female director at the helm.
Not only that, DaCosta joins a group of female filmmakers known for their film adaptations of famed comic book legends. Of course, there is DaCosta’s predecessor, Anna Boden. Cate Shortland directed the upcoming Black Widow film. Finally, Chloe Zhao has directed another blockbuster Marvel release scheduled for February 2021, The Eternals.
Marvel hopes to continue hiring talented female directors.
Captain Marvel 2
Captain Marvel was released in 2019 and earned $1.3 billion worldwide. The first film recounted the story of Carol Danvers, played by Brie Larson. Danvers becomes Captain Marvel when she survives an explosion tied to an alien engine and becomes one of the most powerful heroes in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The story line for the new film is a secret. However, we know that Captain Marvel 2 is scheduled for release on July 8, 2022.
