What If…? Will Feature Surprise Cameos!

What If…?, the Marvel animated series set to debut on Disney+ this summer, is going to offer some exciting fan surprises!

What’s Been Revealed

A.C. Bradley, head writer working on the series, recently took to Twitter to answer fan questions. Bradley, who has also worked on Trollhunters: Tales of Aradia, confirmed that there will be “more than a few surprising MCU [Marvel Cinematic Universe] cameos.”

Bradley also shared that characters will appear in more than just their own dedicated episodes.

About What If…?

During Disney’s Investor Day (on December 10, 2020), a summary of the series was shared. The synopsis read:

“What If…? flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Coming to Disney+ in summer 2021, Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles.”

The narrator of the series will be Uatu the Watcher, voiced by Jeffrey Wright. Having appeared in Marvel comic books, The Watchers are a race of extraterrestrials assigned to record and observe the events of the universe for beings who will come after it ends. Uatu is The Watcher assigned to observe Earth and its solar system.

Uatu (created, along with his brethren, by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) lives on the Moon watching all major Marvel events as they happen. Defying his assignment, Uatu has interfered in events on Earth nearly 400 times. These actions put him at odds with his fellow Watchers. Whether or not this story line will be part of the series remains unknown.

What We Can Expect

The animated series will feature some well-known actors within the MCU. The intention of the series is to place the characters in new surroundings and mix up their stories.

One story expected to be part of the series will include a young T’Challa being abducted by Yondu and the Ravagers instead of Peter Quill. This should be particularly exciting for fans of Chadwick Boseman, as we will hear his voice in multiple episodes of the series. Kevin Feige confirmed that Boseman participated in several recording sessions before he passed away in August 2020.

Another story line will follow a scenario where Peggy Carter receives the Super Soldier Serum rather than Steve Rogers.

Although we’ll have to wait until Summer to see the series, Marvel has released a trailer to hold us over.

We can’t wait for these intriguing story lines to hit the small screen!
