Marvel Welcomes Alien and Predator
Marvel has acquired the rights to both the Alien and Predator franchises! According to Marvel, the additions will “feature new and classic characters from Earth and beyond to explore never-before-seen corners of both the Alien and Predator universes.”
Todays’ announcement did not include creative teams or titles for future comics, but promotional art by David Finch (award winning Batman artist) was revealed. The ‘teaser images’ depict Alien’s Xenomorph and Predator, who appears to be targeting the Avengers.
On Devising New Artwork
In a press release issued by Marvel today, Finch reflected:
“Alien and Predator are the two of the most identifiable, iconic characters of all time, and I love them for that. But mostly, it’s being fortunate enough to be a kid when they were new. I’ve seen every movie they’ve ever been in, and I cannot wait to see them wreaking havoc in the Marvel Universe. I drew my pictures of them with a massive smile on my face.”
Carrying the Legacy On
The Alien and Predator franchises have been around for more than 40 years! They were the subject of several 20th Century Fox-distributed films and then licensed to Dark Horse Comics.
C.B. Cebulski, Editor-in-Chief of Marvel shared his excitement in today’s announcement:
“There’s nothing more thrilling than a story that will keep you at the edge of your seat, and Alien and Predator have delivered that time and time again! I can clearly remember where I was when I saw each of these modern masterpieces for the first time, and reveling in how both masterfully weave extraterrestrial dread and drama into some of the most iconic scenes we’ve ever seen on film. And it’s that legacy that we’re going to live up to!”
Will Alien and Predators Join the MCU?
The big questions looms… will Alien and Predator join the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)? The answer is not necessarily.
MCU has yet to weave Fantastic Four or X-Men into it’s narrative. It is therefore, unlikely that Alien and Predator will join MCU at this point. Who knows if the characters will even appear in the Marvel comics universe?
Only time will tell what Marvel does with its new acquisition. We do know that all new Alien and Predator stories are set to be released in 2021, so stay tuned!
