Will Deadpool Appear in Phase Four?
Rumors surrounding Deadpool’s appearance in a future Marvel movie crossover have persisted for quite some time. As plans for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) are released, reports of Deadpool’s upcoming roles continue to gain momentum.
The mercenary character became well-known after Ryan Reynolds’ hilarious portrayal in Deadpool and Deadpool 2. Known as the “Merc with a Mouth” (because he talks and jokes constantly), Deadpool has gained an incredible following for being a different kind of super hero.
A Unique Super Hero
Deadpool is best known for breaking the “fourth wall.” The “fourth wall” is a theatrical term used for the imaginary “wall” that stands between actors and their audience – or, in the case of film, an actor and a camera lens.
This acting device dates back to Elizabethan and Restoration drama. Shakespearean actors would often run through the theater, making jokes and engaging audience members in the action occurring on stage. Similarly, Deadpool frequently addresses the audience directly for humorous effect.
Deadpool 3
According to industry insiders, production on Deadpool 3 has not begun. Since Disney/Marvel acquired the rights to Deadpool, studio executives have been working to determine how the character’s R-rated nature will best fit into the MCU. This is no small feat since as neither Disney nor Marvel Studios make “R” rated movies.
In addition to disagreements about the future movie’s rating, there have been disputes among the film’s creative team and the story’s direction. Ryan Reynolds even admitted that he doesn’t know when Deadpool’s third film will arrive.
Where Will Deadpool Fit In?
So which MCU films could Deadpool possibly play a role in?
Several reports indicate that Deadpool will appear as a supporting character with a large role in Spider-Man 5 and 6. In addition, it has been revealed that Deadpool will make cameos in at least two Marvel Phase 4 movies. Many suspect these appearances will set up his stand-alone third film.
According to a wide variety of sources, Deadpool will appear in Thor: Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The scripts for these films are not complete, but there are many different ways to fit Deadpool into these stories – even if only for a few seconds of screentime.
What Do You Think?
A few fundamental questions remain. Will we meet a censored Deadpool going forward? Or will he still bring the same brand of wacky humor that has earned him such a strong fan following?
